Smokin’ Aces August 21, 2007

The ensemble cast and stylish look pulled me to this crime thriller. Buddy “Aces” Israel is a magician turned gangster who has incurred the wrath of mafia boss Primo Sparazza. Sparazza puts out a $1 million hit on Aces as he decides to turn witness for the FBI. Now FBI agents need to protect Aces who is hiding in Lake Tahoe while an array of hitmen (and women) are after him.

Writer-director Joe Carnahan (Narc) creates a complex story that could easily lose a viewer in the maze of characters. Though he makes a good looking film that aims to be as interesting or entertaining as a Quentin Tarantino or Guy Ritchie flick, it isn’t. The twist in the climax doesn’t wow you either.

The cast includes Andy Garcia, Ben Affleck, Ray Liotta, Ryan Reynolds, Alicia Keys, Jeremy Piven and Martin Henderson among others. Ryan Reynolds, who is surprisingly effective as an FBI agent and Piven, who makes a suitable Aces get the most screen time with Garcia and Liotta being the best among the rest.

Despite the style and the extra large ensemble cast, this film never manages to really get you interested. Apparently the movie was made for a quite a low budget and therefore ended up as a moderate success. This isn’t quite the hip crime thriller that it intends to be. Avoidable despite scattered moments that amuse.
