Little Terrorist March 9, 2007

Ashvin Kumar’s Oscar nominated short film makes for a pleasing watch. This 15 minute short is the story of a young boy from Pakistan who crosses the border to India in the search of a cricket ball. When the soldiers come chasing for the “terrorist”, he takes shelter in a neighboring village at the home of a Hindu Brahmin family. How they help him out is what the rest of the film is about.

Apparently the film is inspired by the true story of one such boy who was sent back with some intervention from the Prime Minister at the time, Atal Bihari Vajpayee (source UpperStall.com).

The three main actors Julfuqar Ali (playing Jamal), Sushil Sharma (playing Bhola) and Megnaa Mehtaa (playing Rani) have little experience but come up with convincing portrayals. The film has an authentic feel about it and it passes some subtle messages while managing to engage and entertain.

The awards and recognitions at various film festivals topped off by the Oscar nomination speak for writer-director Ashvin Kumar’s work. I have been looking forward to his first feature length film, The Forest, starring Javed Jaffrey and Nandana Sen and hope to watch it soon.
