Thiruda Thiruda (Donga Donga) February 12, 2007

After reading the previous post on Iruvar(Iddaru) I could not resist writing about this flick which happens to be Mani Ratnam’s biggest box office failure till date. I guess the main reason it bombed so badly is because a no-brainer action comedy was the last thing people expected from Mani. Also, this was a genre whose time had not yet come – look at the cult status films like this one and Kshana Kshanam enjoy today and you can see what I am trying to say.

Coming from Mani, Thiruda Thiruda is definitely a flawed product but it still has got enough charm to win you over again and again. The story (credited to Ramgopal Varma) is a typical bank heist (the robbery happens on a train here) which results in the good guys, the bad guys and the police running helter skelter in search of the money cache which now is disguised as a moving container. Most of the fun here is from the relentless madcap action sequences set to A.R Rahman’s superlative rousing score. You simply have to leave your brains behind to thoroughly enjoy this.

This was Rahman’s second outing with Mani and the expectations from him were quite high – well, he simply outdid himself with this one. Every single song is a gem. It is hard to pick out my favorite but in recent times the rather unusual Rasathi/Seethalu had caught my fancy. Also, the different themes in the background employed throught the movie are a standout.

Among the cast Heera springs a surprise. She is too good as the cantankerous village belle. Prashant, Anand, S.P Balasubramanyam and Anu Agarwal are apt. Salim Ghouse as the villian looks quite daunting. I wonder why we don’t see much of him. Coming to the flaws…though the movie is shot beautifully there are too many disjointed sequences which gives the feeling that this film was hastily made. And given the fact that the rest of the movie wasn’t too logical either you might at times feel being taken for a ride (literally).

On the whole, Thiruda Thiruda is a film which you’ll come to love irrespective of its shortcomings. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen it and how many times more I’ll see. Even if you somehow don’t find it interesting, you can simply sit through it for the music and visuals.
