Around the World in 80 Days February 8, 2007

The first thing I was wondering after watching this flick was….how on earth did it win the Best Picture Oscar! Believe me, this is one of the most boring films I’ve ever seen in my life and on that a three hour runtime forms the icing on the cake.

The film initially gives the impression that it is more like a documentary with an introduction to Jules Verne’s other novels. The main story then begins with a certain Phileas Fogg (David Niven) making a huge bet with his fellow “Reform Club” members that he could make a round trip around the world in eighty days. Along with his assistant Passepartout (Cantinflas), he sets out on his mission. I thought from thereon it would be a great adventure with these guys travelling around different places and coming across interesting situations. Alas, I was badly mistaken. What follows is an absolutely bland and uneventful saga which never seemed to end.

I haven’t read the book but I am pretty sure that would have been much more interesting (otherwise it wouldn’t have been so famous). I actually found the cast quite irritating for reasons which can be attributed more to the film than the actual performances. This film was remade in 2004 with lots of stars like Jackie Chan and Arnold Schwarzenegger but it was both critically panned and a commercial failure. In any case, this is a film I would easily advise you to skip.
