The Angrez September 17, 2006

This hilarious film more than anything else will probably be remembered as the ultimate tribute to the Hyderabadi dialect. Yes..there is a plot too (and some lame performers) but it is of no significance as long as the “Ismail Bhai” gang is present on screen to crack you up over and over again with every line they utter especially the guy who plays Salim – he single handedly steals the show from every one else…I missed his name in the credits somehow. In fact, I found the actual story to be somewhat of an irritant…I wish it had revolved totally around the gang and its conversations.

The Hyderabadi dialect has been shown quite a few times in mainstream Hindi cinema but alas the guys spouting it were either Shakti Kapoor or Johnny Lever who could never do justice to the humor inherent in even the simplest of conversations….this movie amply capitalizes on this aspect is probably the only reason why it works big time. I am not sure if someone who isn’t from Hyderabad would enjoy this but if you are a Hyderabadi then there is no reason why you should miss this one. More good news is that there is a new flick called Hyderabad Nawabs which is playing and inherits the same cast from its predecessor.

I heard a lot about this movie from some of my friends. So, I watched it with some expectations. The primary draw for this low budget comedy is the authentic hyderabadi lingo spoken by some of its characters. This has rarely been seen in any film for more than a small bit of time and that explains the reason for its success in Hyderabad. As you mentioned, I think all hyderabadis will enjoy these characters and their dialogue. However, it isn’t really likely that anyone else can enjoy this flick because the rest of it is juvenile crap that is rarely funny.
When I watched this movie, I was reminded of the dramas screened on Doordarshan in the early nineties and before. Poor acting and direction (Nikhil Kuntaa who plays Pranay) together with a screenplay hampered by an inane plot makes this movie irritating. The guy who plays Ramesh really got on my nerves. However, the scenes with the hyderabadi group had me in splits and the identification factor makes it worth watching. These scenes can be watched repeatedly. The guy who plays Salim Pheku (Mast Ali) gets the best dialogue while the Ismail bhai (Raju Srivastav) character is funny too. The fact that this team is out with its next movie titled Hyderabad Nawabs means that they probably realise what their strength is. Anyone who has lived in Hyderabad for a considerable amount of time would want to watch this flick (definitely parts of it atleast).

2. Ashraf Hyderabadi - February 26, 2007

This was perhaps not the best made movie, but it was more than good overall. Being a Hyderabadi, I am happy that someone at least attempted to convey the real Hyderabadi Dakkani Urdu. It is an identity in itself. Besides the proper Hyderabad city area, people in large parts of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Maharashtra speak that language and have their own culture and lifestyle. All Hyderabadi I have seen/heard in bollywood movies so far does not come even close to the authentic style this movie captures. It reminds me of some Coastal Andhra dialect which is totally different and from the real Hyderabadi. I feel like I have just had a trip to Hyderabad.

7. Al Balushi - May 11, 2008

I am not an Indian but i do understand hindi to be honest this movie is very funny specially the Isamil Bahi group and Yaduv MAMA. The two NRI’s are very poor in acting. Salim Pehku is the best.

11. Shakir - September 7, 2009

People of hyderabadi origin? I actually had friends from all over country who enjoyed this movie … IN TOTALITY. Period.

The producers did try to cash in on this, but weren’t quite successful. Nevertheless, with so much crap being churned out of Bollywood, we do have an evening free, don’t we?
