The only thing I can recall from “First Blood” is the initial sequence of Stallone walking on the bridge and being intercepted by a cop. As far as I can remember that was the first Hollywood film I saw but I still cannot forget that scene.
It might not have garnered awards like Stallone’s Rocky but Rambo has always remained the quintessential Hollywood action hero. He’s also probably the only movie character whose name has found its way into colloquial usage to refer to a “tough guy”…..and he’s back for one last time. If that’s not a good enough reason for you to go and watch this then nothing can be.
An ageing Rambo makes his living catching snakes near war-torn Burma. He reluctantly transports a group of missionaries into a Burmese village but once they go missing, he along with a group of merecenaries sets out to save them. The only objective Stallone (who writes and directs as well) had seems to be to bring a respectable end to the franchise without any lofty ambitions. So, all the effort has gone into getting the action (or rather carnage) right….and what carnage! It’s the stuff you get to do in single shooter video games. You cannot help wondering at the power of the weaponry used in the movie. Bullets here brutally (and with much ease) dislodge body parts and a bomb almost causes a nuclear explosion in the jungle. But Hell…who cares! I paid for the ticket to see Rambo do this stuff and that’s exactly what I got.
He might be past sixty but he hasn’t lost one bit of the charisma; Stallone is after all…Stallone! The only complaint I have with the movie is that it doesn’t feature Stallone shirtless. Still, you cannot miss this one if Sly means something to you.
